Across the country a frightening thing is happening to the beauty industry and in our opinion, it isn’t getting enough coverage. The long and the short of it is that politicians don’t think that beauty schools are worth funding for as long as they have been, they think there should be and could be less education required for beauty school students to get licensed.

In Colorado HB 26-1181 will repeal the regulation of hairstylists and barbers by 9/1/2033 and nationwide The Department of Education is considering a new Earnings Premium Accountability Metric that, as currently written, could result in more than 90% of beauty schools losing access to federal financial aid. Across the country we are seeing more and more of these pieces of legislations being presented.

For a little bit of context current requirements in the state of Colorado call for 1500 hours of cosmetology school before they will allow any applicant to take the test- this is down from 2200 hours that was required only a few years ago.

These new regulations are, quite frankly, terrifying to hear about. As cosmetologists we learn more than haircutting and coloring, notably we are taught bloodborne pathogens, various hair and skin diseases to watch out for, and much more to help keep ourselves, our clients, and the general population healthy. To hear that there are plans to shrink the number of hours required in school or cut school funding altogether makes us curious what the future may have in store for cosmetologists across the country.

So, what is Pompadours Hair Salon in Boulder Colorado doing to combat these terrifying changes to legislation? The short answer is nothing different than normal, yep, you heard that correctly nothing different. Since our inception 36 years ago, Pompadours has been committed to continuing education through our apprentice program and through our partners with Aveda to provide continuing education not only to our new talent but also to our stylists who have been with us for a while.

We are excited to announce a new partnership that we have with the Academy of Cosmetology Arts to help provide a quality education to cosmetology students near the end of their education. You may have met Sienna, our newest apprentice who is a part of this program. We are happy to provide her an opportunity to complete her required hours to become a hairstylist, learn from some of the amazing experts we have here at pompadours.

Sienna joins our amazing team of apprentices alongside Julia and Bugs.
